History
Medium bombers played a pivotal role during the Second World War, and despite a challenging start, the North American B-25 Mitchell evolved into a highly effective aircraft. It served in every theatre of the war, showcasing its versatility by performing a wide range of tactical missions across various environments.
One of the most notable missions involving the North American B-25 Mitchell occurred shortly after 8am on 18th April 1942. Sixteen bombers took off from the short deck of USS Hornet, heading towards Japan. This daring raid was a direct response to the attack on Pearl Harbour, demonstrating the American people's resolve and their military's determination to achieve victory.
The B-25B aircraft used in the Doolittle Raid performed admirably but were already being upgraded. The subsequent C/D model (with different letters indicating the manufacturer) became the definitive version, marking the first truly mass-produced iteration of this effective medium bomber.
