The Canterbury Mountaineering Club is one of New Zealand's Leading regional climbing clubs. Today members of the Club climb mountains, ski or parapente off them and race through them. When the Club began its life in 1925 as the Christchurch tramping Club its members undertook more modest walks on the Port and Banks Peninsula hills near Christchurch and made ascents of the easier peaks of the Canterbury foothills. The Club made its transition to a climbing club in the 1930s, when members explored poorly known areas of the Southern Alps and made numerous first ascents of unclimbed peaks. In the following decades some members climbed at the cutting edge of New Zealand alpinism while others were content to climb easier peaks and cross alpine passes. The Club has been home to those who enjoy finding recreation in the mountains at all levels.
In this centennial history several members have written about different activities of the Club they have been engaged in or that are of particular interest to them. The result is a well-informed, lively history of a Club that has played a major role in the history of New Zealand mountaineering.
The book is profusely illustrated with historical photographs as well as spectacular photographs of members' daring ascents in New Zealand and overseas.
