History

The McDonnell Douglas Phantom, one of the most powerful interceptors to serve the Royal Air Force, was initially created for the US Navy as a carrier-based fighter-bomber. Its outstanding performance and adaptability made it a highly desirable aircraft, with the RAF becoming one of its international users.

The RAF began operating Phantoms originally intended for the Royal Navy at the Leuchars air base in Fife. Following the decommissioning of HMS Ark Royal in 1978, the remaining Fleet Air Arm Phantoms were transferred to the RAF. These aircraft, known as the Phantom FG.1, were specifically adapted for British service with Rolls-Royce Spey engines, which offered more thrust than the original American engines, albeit with increased fuel usage.

Nos 43 and 111 Squadrons utilised the Phantom FG.1 to protect Britain's airspace during the 1980s, maintaining an essential Quick Reaction Alert capability during the peak of the Cold War.
