• 1:48 scale model kit comprising 245 pieces
• Realistic bi-folding wing system for authentic carrier storage setup
• Includes three different paint schemes
• Skill level 4 - ideal for experienced modellers
• Wingspan measures 344mm when fully assembled
• Detailed plastic construction reflecting the Gannet's distinctive profile
• Suitable for ages 8 years and above

History

Considered one of the most unconventional aircraft designed by Fairey to reach full-scale production, the Gannet was developed to fulfil a 1945 Royal Navy requirement for a cutting-edge carrier-based turboprop anti-submarine hunter-killer. Created to address the growing Soviet submarine threat at the dawn of the Cold War, the Gannet was outfitted with state-of-the-art electronic detection systems. Upon locating an enemy submarine, it could be marked, tracked, and engaged using bombs, depth charges, rockets, and air-launched acoustic torpedoes. This made it a formidable anti-submarine aircraft, capable of targeting submarines both on the surface and underwater.

A standout feature of the Gannet was its innovative Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba engine. This setup involved two gas turbine engines positioned side by side, sharing a gearbox but functioning independently, each driving its own coaxially mounted, contra-rotating propeller. Another distinctive aspect was the bi-folding wing mechanism, which enabled the storage of this large aircraft on relatively small aircraft carriers.
