The White Rhinoceros or square-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is the largest extant species of rhinoceros. It has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species. There are two subspecies out of which the northern white rhinoceros is considered critically endangered and possibly extinct in the Wild. The name "white rhino" stems from a mistranslation between English and Dutch in which "wijd" (=wide; wide for wide mouth/square-lipped) was mistaken for "white".
