Airfix - Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.XVIII
Discover the Airfix - Supermarine Spitfire F Mk.XVIII, a meticulously detailed scale model that captures the essence of this iconic WWII fighter aircraft. Designed specifically for avid model enthusiasts and aviation aficionados, the F Mk.XVIII is a true testament to engineering excellence. This variant is a result of the quest for a 'Super Spitfire', showcasing enhancements over the legendary Griffon-powered Mk.XIV. Its design incorporates advanced cockpit features for improved piloting control, increased fuel capacity for longer missions, and robust wings that enable the carriage of both rockets and bombs alongside its formidable cannon and machine gun armament. With only 300 units produced, the RAF operated two iterations of this aircraft: the F.Mk.XVIII with its efficient E wing, and the FR.Mk.XVIII, equipped for photo reconnaissance. Adorned with authentic detailing, this model is perfect for display or as an exceptional gift for scale modeling enthusiasts. Though the Spitfire F Mk.XVIII came in too late for WWII action, it played a crucial role in 'Operation Firedog' and during the Malayan Emergency. A variant of this famous fighting aeroplane which was the result of a desire to produce a 'Super Spitfire', the F Mk.XVIII was a further refinement of the Rolls Royce Griffon powered Mk.XIV, but one which incorporated a number of improvements over its predecessor. In addition to several cockpit enhancements for the pilot, the F Mk.XVIII also benefitted from increased fuel carrying capacity and strengthened wings, allowing it to carry either rockets or bombs in addition to its cannon and machine gun armament. With a total production run or 300 aircraft, the RAF would receive two versions of this fighter, the F.Mk.XVIII fitted with the standard E wing and the FR.Mk.XVIII, which included a camera for photo reconnaissance work. Too late to see service during WWII, these powerful Spitfires did see action as part of 'Operation Firedog' and actions against Communist guerrillas during the Malayan Emergency.
