Highly pressures compressed liquid stored in the extinguisher. The gas disperses quickly, effective from one to two metres, expands and cools the surrounding air. Often causing dry ice to shoot out which may form around the nozzle. To avoid the fire re-igniting, continue to apply the co2 extinguisher even after the appears to be out.
