Built by F. Schichau in Elbing, the Type 1939 Torpedoboote performed extremely well at sea. They were highly manoeuvrable, even in bad weather and especially when turning, despite a tendency to take on spray in strong winds. Well-armed and robust, their general appearance differed only slightly from one ship to another, essentially as regards weapons systems or the aerials for the detection systems and depending on their period.
